ILOILO – At least 300 residents of Mina town availed themselves of free medical services from the Department of Health (DOH) Region 6 in line with the observance of World Tuberculosis (TB) Day on March 24.

The health caravan offered a range of services including PhilPEN risk assessments, mental health evaluations, HIV screening, chest X-rays, medical consultations, and maintenance medicines.

The initiative formed part of DOH-6’s commitment to provide quality and accessible healthcare, particularly in rural communities.

Tuberculosis, a bacterial airborne disease caused by Mycobacterium tuberculosis, primarily affects the lungs and remains a major public health concern in the country.

Dr. Bea Nataralay, DOH-6 Regional TB Coordinator, underscored the importance of public involvement in TB prevention.

“The fight against TB starts with you; it starts with us. Let’s work together for a TB-free Mina and a TB-free Philippines,” said Dr. Nataralay.

Joining the activity were Dr. Maria Socorro Quiñon and Dr. Rodney Labis of the Iloilo Provincial Health Office; Mina Mayor Lydia Grabato; Municipal Health Officer Dr. Janeatte Sobrevega; and Mina RHU TB Nurse Sylvia Caldera.

Renowned medical experts Dr. Ellamas Divinagracia, Dr. Analyn Jumeras, and Dr. Ma. Cecilia Momville also addressed participants’ questions and shared insights on TB prevention and management.

The event was held in partnership with the Philippine College of Chest Physicians (PCCP) – Iloilo Chapter and the Philippine Society for Microbiology and Infectious Diseases (PSMID) – Western Visayas Chapter.

World TB Day is commemorated annually to raise public awareness and strengthen community engagement in the fight against tuberculosis./PN
