ILOILO City – In preparation for a peaceful and safe Holy Week observance, the Department of Health (DOH) in Western Visayas has released a series of health reminders for the public.
It advises the following measures to ensure a healthy and safe celebration:
* Bring a first aid kit containing essential supplies such as alcohol, band-aids, antiseptic, bandages, paracetamol for fever and headache, and any prescribed maintenance medication.
* Know the location of first-aid stations and emergency medical facilities in the area.
* Keep a close watch on children at all times. Attach a name tag with the contact number of their parent or guardian.
* Follow proper waste disposal practices to maintain a clean environment.
* Prevent dehydration by drinking enough clean water.
* Avoid bringing alcoholic beverages and limit the consumption of juice and soft drinks.
* Use sunscreen and wear comfortable clothing. Bring an umbrella, hat, or raincoat for protection against the elements.
* Ensure that food is cooked properly to avoid foodborne illnesses.
* Stay updated with weather alerts and health advisories.
* Follow health protocols such as wearing face masks and ensuring that you are in good health before traveling.
White Code Alert Activated
On April 13, the DOH-Central Office issued a call to the public to prioritize health and safety during the Holy Week. This comes as preparations for travel, religious activities, and family gatherings intensify.
The DOH has officially activated a White Code Alert, which will remain in effect until April 20, 2025. This alert ensures that health facilities and personnel are ready to respond to any health emergencies during the busy period. Hospitals and emergency rooms are on high alert, prepared for a potential surge in patients due to accidents, injuries, or other health-related incidents.
The DOH will coordinate closely with regional and local health offices to ensure a synchronized response to any emergencies across the region.
DOH Secretary Ted Herbosa has also reminded the public to remain vigilant, especially on the roads, where many people will be traveling. He cautioned against the dangers of extreme heat, stressing the importance of staying hydrated and avoiding prolonged exposure to the sun. Additionally, with the hot weather, food spoilage is a concern, so proper food storage and handling are essential.
“Let us all observe the Holy Week responsibly. Visit DOH hospitals that are on standby to provide healthcare services to those in need this Semana Santa,” urged Secretary Herbosa./PN
