ILOILO – The Department of Health (DOH) Region 6 recently taught clean and safe food preparation to students, teachers, parents, and barangay officials in Barangay Pili, Ajuy town.

On Nov. 4, a student died while 44 others were hospitalized for food poisoning after an acquaintance party and United Nations’ celebration at Pili National High School.

Mayor Jett Roxas said teaching the community clean, proper and safe preparation of food and drinking water is important.

The food poisoning was traced to contaminated ice water mixed with buko juice.

According to the mayor, eight water sources in Barangay Pili are continuously being monitored; these were found positive for bacteria and are not safe to drink or use to prepare food.

DOH gave the school and the barangay tablets that can purify water at the said sources.

Meanwhile, Roxas reminded the attendees during DOH-6’s information drive on clean and safe food preparation to be careful with water and to always wash their hands, especially when preparing food.

He also confirmed that all those who have been diagnosed with amoeba have been discharged from the hospital and are now in good condition./PN
