ILOILO City ā€“ The Department of Health (DOH) assured parents in Western Visayas that deworming pills are safe and effective.

Dr. Jocelyn Te, DOH Emerging and Re-emerging Infectious Diseases regional coordinator, said it is important to provide proper information to the public, reassuring students and parents regarding the safety and the effectiveness of deworming pills.

ā€œDOH uses deworming pills Albendazole and Mebendazole, which stay inside the intestines and paralyzes the worms,ā€ Te said.

She added that the deworming pills given to children and teenagers (1 to 18 years old) are used since 1999 under DOH guidelines.

ā€œA light meal prior to deworming reduces adverse events and side effects. The drugā€™s most common side effects are dizziness, nausea, headache, and vomiting,ā€ Te stressed.

Te said deworming pills are only administered to children if their parents signed a consent form.

ā€œIt is not administered when children are seriously ill, allergic to the drugs, experiencing abdominal pain at the time of the mass drug administration, experiencing diarrhea, and has severe acute malnutrition,ā€ Te explained.

DOH holds school-based and community-based deworming for children and teenagers every January and July.

ā€œThere is better absorption of the nutrients and therefore the overall health and well-being of the child is greatly improved [when he/she takes deworming pills] ,ā€ Te added. (With PIA/PN)
