BACOLOD City – The Department of Labor and Employment (DOLE) Region 6 has been asked for support for farmers in this city thru its capacity-building services for livelihood program.
The members of the city council on Oct. 26 passed a resolution authored by Councilor Bartolome Orola in relation to the request.
Part of the resolution read: “It is the policy of the state to ensure that the poorer sectors of the society have equitable access to resources, income opportunities, basic and support services and infrastructure especially in areas where productivity is low as a means of improving their quality of life compared with other sectors of society.”
Orola said that DOLE, thru its livelihood enhancement program, assists self-employed and unpaid family workers in the informal economy to enhance and make their existing livelihood undertaking grow into viable and sustainable businesses that will provide income at par with minimum wage earners.
He added that workers in the informal economy engaged in livelihood undertakings include farmers, among others.
“The DOLE through its provincial offices, provides services such as acquisition of productive resources in the form of equipment, raw materials, and tools that can be used by the eligible beneficiaries as well as trainings orientation and advisories on the entrepreneurship and development and business alliances,” Orola further said.
He also said the marginalized agricultural sector provides invaluable contribution to the food security and local economy of the city, and as such, deserve to be accorded the highest priority in terms of benefits and opportunities that the government can offer to enable them to maximize their contribution to the nation’s wealth./PN
