GM Leinier Dominguez Perez won the 33rd Leon Chess Tournament which concluded July 12th at the chess.com server – the first time the over three-decade event was conducted online because of the COVID-19 pandemic.
Dominguez Perez defeated young Spanish GM Jaime Santos Latasa, 2½-1½, in their four-game final match after both disposed of their semifinal opponents GM Parham Maghsoodloo and GM Alexei Shirov, respectively. Although online, the event’s thirty-third edition continued with its traditional format of four players and a cup system with a semifinal and a final. The time control was 20 minutes base reflection time plus a 10-second increment per move.
Practically all modern world chess champions – including Garry Kasparov, Vladimir Kramnik, Veselin Topalov, Viswanathan Anand, Magnus Carlsen – and other chess greats had once upon a time played and won this event. GM Wesley So won the 2018 edition of this tournament, while Maghsoodloo is the defending champion, having won last year.
