ILOILO City – No gambling. No drugs. No liquor. No deadly weapons. No loud music.
These are all prohibited in cemeteries, according to Chief Superintendent Jose Gentiles, Western Visayas police director.
To achieve the goal of “zero crime” this Nov. 1 and 2 (All Saints’ Day and All Souls’ Day), the Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) is deploying “95 percent” of its police force in the field.
“We will see to it that everyone is safe,” said Gentiles.
The PRO-6 is now on full alert. No policemen are allowed to take a leave of absence. They have been instructed to enforce the prohibitions in cemeteries.
“We go to cemeteries to pray for our dead loved ones,” said Gentiles, explaining the ban on loud music.
In this city, there will be roving patrols “to maximize police presence in crowded areas near cemeteries,” said Senior Inspector Shella Mae Sangrines, public information officer of the Iloilo City Police Office (ICPO).
She reminded the public to refrain from carrying inside cemeteries pointed objects, knives or guns.
Gentiles said his office is also coordinating with the Armed Forces of the Philippines, Highway Patrol Group, Aviation Group, Maritime Group, Bureau of Fire Protection and volunteer groups.
The following areas are expected to be crawling with cops: cemeteries, bus terminals, seaports and airports.
Gentiles said police assistance desks will be set up in these areas in coordination with local government units.
“Our ICPO director (Senior Superintendent Remus Zacharias Canieso) instructed the chief of operations to determine if there is a need to adjust the number of police personnel to be deployed in cemeteries and churches and in other places of convergence,” said Sangrines.
Police personnel and beat patrollers were given instructions to coordinate with partner agencies like emergency responders and rescuers.
The ICPO tactical operations center has been activated.
“The public can contact our tactical operations center through hotline numbers 911, 166 or 16600 on their mobile phones if they have concerns and in case they cannot access our public assistance desks,” said Sangrines.
The tactical operations center will be manned on a 24-hour basis.
Gentiles reminded the public, too, to secure their homes before leaving for cemeteries, and be careful when on the road traveling./PN
