MANILA – The Malacañang on Friday said President Rodrigo “Rody” Duterte should not be blamed for the “sneaky” burial of the late President Ferdinand Marcos at the Libingan ng mga Bayani.
“It’s very misguided to consider the President as doing a sneaky act,” said presidential spokesperson Ernesto Abella at a press briefing in Peru. “In fact, he has always faced all his situations fair and square.”
Abella, who was part of Duterte’s delegation to this year’s Apec (Asia-Pacific Economic Cooperation) Summit in Lima, noted that the burial was a private affair of the Marcos family, and it was them who decided how the late president would be buried.
“The burial belongs to the Marcos family. He was given a soldier’s burial. It was their private affair, it is the family’s concern,” he said.
Abella pointed out that Duterte had openly expressed during the campaign period that he is in favor of burying Marcos, who died in Hawaii 27 years ago, at the Libingan mga Bayani.
“I doubt there was anything sneaky about the matter. In fact, it was part of his campaign promise, right? So the fact that they finally got to bury him was part of the process and there was no intent to be as you say ‘sneaky’,” he said.
Marcos’ burial was unannounced until on the last minute on Friday noon, surprising those who were opposed to it. It happened 10 days after the Supreme Court ruled to dismiss the consolidated petitions seeking to stop it through a 9-5 vote.
After the interment, Marcos’ daughter, Ilocos Norte governor Imee Marcos, thanked Duterte for allowing the burial in a brief statement to the press.
She also asked for understanding for keeping the event “simple, private, and solemn.” (GMA News)
