Don’t wait for the deadline, register early – Comelec

ILOILO City – The Commission on Elections (Comelec) in this city urged those qualified not to wait for the deadline but visit early its office to register for next year’s midterm elections.

On the other hand, registered voters needing to rectify errors in their records should go to the Comelec office early, too.

The daily satellite registration conducted by Comelec in this city will end this Sept. 18.

After this date, unserved clients are advised to proceed to Robinsons Place Iloilo where a registration will be held Sept. 19 to 29.

Election Officer II Jonathan Sayno said they have been conducting off-site registration to cater to voters in preparation for next year’s local election.

“Our main office in Manila required us to conduct satellite registration to reach out to sectors like persons with disabilities, senior citizens and first time voters who do not give attention to registration. The point is for them to be able to participate and exercise their right of suffrage,” Sayno said.

Sayno said they are the ones going out to barangays instead of waiting for these registrants to come to the Comelec office.

The mobile registration in Arevalo, Molo and Mandurriao districts has been completed. Comelec, as a strategy, clusters smaller barangays into one venue for the registration.

However, a separate registration is held in barangays with prospects of bigger voters.

“In every district, we have five venues for the registration,” said Sayno.

From Aug. 29 to  Sept. 7, the registration will cater to barangays in the City Proper district and Sept. 8 to 15 for La Paz district.

Meanwhile, a two-day registration will be held for male inmates at the Bureau of Jail Management and Penology in Barangay Ungka, Jaro and female inmates at the prison facility on General Luna Street this Sept. 17 to 18.

The last week of registration from Sept. 19 to 29 will be at Robinsons Place Iloilo.

“Sept. 29 is the last day of registration. Based on our calendar of activities, this is part of our pre-election activities prior we go to the proper calendar of activities,” said Sayno.

The registration caters to new registration, reactivation, correction of entries, change of status and transfer of registration record.

The Comelec attends to an average of 300 clients daily. (PNA)
