MANILA – Filipina mountain biker Ariana Dormitorio came out as the overall champion in leg 1 of the 2017 Asian Mountain Bike Series recently at Yawatahama, Japan.
The Iloilo City-native started her campaign this year with the overall title after topping the Female Under 23 and Elite Divisions of the field that also featured medalists in the Asian Games and Asian Championships.
Dormitorio came up first at the finish line with more than five minutes lead over the closest female elite. The Ilongga also ruled the Under 23 category, where she bested rivals from Japan and Taiwan.
Dormitorio is now the holder of the Red Jersey, which was awarded after she was named the overall champion in leg 1 aside from the Green Jersey, which was given to her for being the defending champion.
“This gold medal just reminds us that kaya ng Pilipino na mag-compete sa ganitong level,” said Dormitorio, who was recognized by the Philippine Sportswriters Association (PSA) early this year for her feats in 2016.
Since there will be no motorbiking in the 2017 Southeast Asian Games, Dormitorio will instead prepare for the two legs of the World Cup under-23 category and the World Championships under-23 in Australia.
The 19-year-old Dormitorio, who is being mentored by her father Donjie Dormitorio, will hope to continue her winning ways in the 2017 Asian MTB Series when it resumes in August in Malaysia./PN
