DOST funds yarn center in Iloilo

ILOILO City – The Department of Science and Technology (DOST) allocated P41.57 million to establish the Regional Yarn Production and Innovation Center (RYPIC) in Miagao, Iloilo.

DOST, DOST-Philippine Textile Research Institute (DOST-PTRI), Greatwomen Philippines Corporation, and the municipality of Miagao have signed a Memorandum of Agreement to furnish the establishment of the yarn center project on Friday.

“We really insisted that this is going to be production and innovation that will fuel the textile industry,” DOST-PTRI director Celia Elumba said.

She said social, economic, ecological and sustainability were the four angles considered in the project.

DOST regional director Engineer Rowen Gelonga said the P29 million part of the fund will be allotted to purchase textile equipment.

This,” she added.

Gelonga noted the project is one of the biggest facilities in terms of yarn production outside of PTRI.

“Our facility can be used by researches and scientists to produce more technologies. They can experiment new types of yarns, although we are now focused on cotton,” he said.

DOST secretary Fortunato dela Peña will lead the lunching of the project next month. (With PNA/PN)
