DOST’s annual science celebration in WV features webinars for youth

IN CONJUNCTION with the 2022 National Science and Technology Week (2022 NSTW) celebration in Western Visayas, a webinar series geared towards the youth will be held.

As the main activity of the Youth Explorers of Science (YES), three webinars will tackle topics on science communication, science education, and technology integration into entrepreneurship to be aired online on Nov. 17 and 18.

The first webinar, “A Day for Startups and Technopreneurship”, is scheduled for Nov. 17 from 1:00 p.m. to 5:00 p.m. The webinar will cover the integration of technological innovation into 21st-century entrepreneurship wherein attendees can acquire the proper knowledge, skills, competencies, and values to use technological advancements to their fullest potential as a way to establish sustainable businesses in the modern day. These important concepts will be presented and discussed by Mr. Daryl Lasafin from FyrLab Accelerator.

The second webinar on Nov. 18, “Science Communication and Social Media”, is scheduled from 8:30 a.m. to 12:00 noon where the prevalence of social media use will be explored as a way to broaden science communication to promote scientific culture among Filipino students and educators. With Mr. Ivan Roblas as resource speaker, attendees will learn how to package science and technology (S&T) content to be engaging throughout various social media platforms. Roblas is a science communicator from DOST-Philippine Council for Industry, Energy, and Emerging Technologies Research and Development (PCIEERD).

On the same day, the third webinar, “VISSER and STARBOOKS: Digital Technologies for Schools”, will take place from 1:00 to 5:00 p.m. VISSER or Versatile Instrumentation System for Science and Education and Research is a modern science kit used to advance the education of senior high school students in the Science, Technology, Engineering, and Mathematics (STEM) strand while STARBOOKS or Science and Technology Academic and Research-Based Openly-Operated KioskS is a system that makes science education available offline for students in far-flung areas with little to no internet signal or connectivity. Both these systems will be introduced to participating students and educators as a way to make science education more up-to-date and accessible. These digital technologies will be presented by Ms. Marvie V. Naquita from DOST-Science and Technology Information Institute (STII) and Mr. Dwight Angelo V. Bruzon from the spin-off company, making.technology Manufacturing Corporation.
