DOT brings ‘Street Food Kulinarya’ to Capiz

By Raymart Escopel

TO intensify the role of street vendors in promoting tourism, the Department of Tourism (DOT) in Western Visayas has produced “Streetfood Kulinarya” – a seminar on food safety and handling, in the province of Capiz.

Held on May 6 to 7, the said free seminar workshop has gathered 34 street vendors in the province.

The participants were provided with added knowledge on basic hygiene, kitchen safety and sanitation, plating and presentation, which are among the most important elements to deliver quality products and services to the customers.

The street food offered by the participants during a hands-on demonstration were evaluated and observed by Iloilo-based chefs Ramlu Villaluna and Aryll Juanitas.

Provincial Tourism and Cultural Affairs Office (PTCAO) of Capiz is already planning out a street food festival to showcase the result of the recently conducted seminar workshop.

PTCAO Head Alphonsus Tesoro said in a report the seminar aims to develop the street food found in Capiz as well as popularize the ready-to-eat food and drinks found in the province.

He added the provincial government has slated two more similar seminar-workshops within the year to further solidify the project’s purpose.

The seminar workshop is also part of the “Experience Capiz” campaign which features food as a tourism attraction aside from different cultural, historical, natural and religious spots found in the province.

Present during the closing ceremonies of the seminar workshop was DOT-6 Regional Director Atty. Helen Catalbas.

It could be learned that DOT-6 conducted the same seminar-workshop in Iloilo City in March./PN
