MANILA – Tourism secretary Bernadette Romulo-Puyat disclosed Tuesday that the rehabilitation on the popular tourist destination Boracay Island has been on track.

“So far it’s been successful. Of course sinasabi namin may phases siya. The first phase was nung last Oct. 26, the second phase is April 26 and the third phase is December of this year. So far we are on track…” Puyat told GMA News.

Puyat said the Department of Tourism has been in contact with the Department of Public Works and Highways as regards road development in the area.

Nung nagbukas tayo nung Oct. 26, ni-remind natin na ito lamang ay soft opening. Siyempre ‘yung roads it is not… it takes a lot of time to build roads but we are constantly in touch with secretary Mark Villar and we are on track,” Puyat said.

“He says by end of March, ‘yung mga main road matatapos na,” she added.

Puyat also said the Department of Environment and Natural Resources is checking the water quality in the island every two weeks.

She said most tourists are also following the rules set by the Boracay Inter-Agency Task Force to maintain the cleanliness of the tourist destination.

President Rodrigo Duterte ordered the six-month closure of the Boracay island to make way for a six-month rehabilitation period starting April 26 of last year.

Following its reopening in October, tourist arrivals to the island have been limited to only 6,405 per day, as only 19,000 tourists will be allowed in Boracay at any given time. (GMA News)
