MANILA – The Department of Tourism (DOT) has allowed nine more hotels and resorts to accommodate guests and tourists in Boracay Island, which recently reopened after a massive rehabilitation that took 6 months to complete.
In its latest advisory, the DOT said the nine establishments were able to comply with the requirements set by them and the Department of Environment and Natural Resources (DENR) and Department of the Interior and Local Government.
The approval is seen as a measure to augment the island’s capacity ahead of the expected influx of tourists this coming summer.
The nine accommodation establishments are expected to add at least 600 more rooms available for booking in Boracay.
“This brings the total of available rooms to 11,612,” the DOT announced in its Facebook page.
The island was closed in April to give way to a massive cleanup and the rehabilitation of its roads and sewerage system after President Rodrigo Duterte called the tourist destination a “cesspool.”
Since its reopening last October 2018, Boracay has enforced tighter regulations to monitor and control the entry of tourists. (ABS-CBN News)
