DEPARTMENT of Transportation (DOTr) Secretary Jaime Bautista said the agency is working on a roadmap for the shift of the transport sector to electric vehicles.

Bautista said the shift from gas-fueled transportation to electric vehicles “is needed now more than ever.”

“We want a green transport system to be in place sooner, and we are working on a roadmap to transition public transport system to EVs,” Bautista said at the Makati Business Club Forum.

“We are also asking the transport operators that instead of running on Euro 5 and Euro 6 engines which are of less air hazard emissions, they can go on full electric since such would be our way to a total green transport system,” he added.

The DOTr is also considering giving tax incentives and soft loans to transport operators in order to help them shift to electric vehicles.

The DOTr has been pushing for the PUV Modernization Program (PUVMP), which aims to replace traditional jeepneys with vehicles that have at least a Euro 4-compliant engine to lessen pollution.

President Ferdinand “Bongbong” Marcos Jr. earlier issued Executive Order (EO) No. 12 which aims to lower the tariff rates for electric vehicles and its components from 5 to 30 percent all the way down to amended 0 percent.

The Department of Trade and Industry has said the implementation of the said EO will nourish the local industry of electric vehicles and help persuade Filipinos to use a “cleaner mode of transportation.” (GMA Integrated News)
