BACOLOD City – Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH) is funding the development of the P16-million comprehensive drainage master plan of this city.
The drainage master plan seeks to address the city’s perennial flooding problem on a long-term basis.
City District Engineer Abraham Villareal earlier said the P16-million budget included consultancy work and the preparation of the feasibility report that would cover both national and local roads.
Armed with a comprehensive drainage master plan, the city government would be able to request for funds to address its flooding problem, said Villareal.
DPWH was hiring experts who would calculate the cost or civil works activities that must be implemented, he added.
In another story, the city government is scouting a site for the proposed P36-million evacuation center to be funded by the national government.
Rep. Greg Gasataya, who facilitated the funding request from DPWH, said the city would need a 3,000-square meter lot where the multi-storey facility would be constructed.
“We are coordinating with Representative Gasataya,” said Jose Maria Vargas, cluster head for City Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office.
Vargas said four sites had been identified upon the consideration of Mayor Evelio Leonardia.
These include the property owned by the city government adjacent to the BREDCO port at the Reclamation Area, Abada-Escay relocation site in Barangay Vista Alegre, Barangay 16, and Bacolod City Police Office compound.
Gasataya said the budget would be released once all the requirements from the the city government were in.
The DPWH targets to start construction before the year ends, the lawmaker said. (PNA/PN)
