DPWH project ‘to protect Buenavista village from flood’

The P23.25-million flood control project in Barangay Tastasan, Buenavista, Guimaras will “help prevent the overflowing of water from the river during rainy days.” DPWH, GUIMARAS DEO

ILOILO City – Residents living near the river in Barangay Tastasan, Buenavista, Guimaras will no longer worry of water overflow during rainy days, according to the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH).

This is after a P23.25-million flood control project was implemented in the area, led by the Guimaras District Engineering Office.

The project involves construction of a flood control structure extending 1.188 kilometers along Tastasan River.

According to District Engineer Rhodora Nuñal, the Tastasan Flood Control project will help prevent the overflowing of water from the river during rainy days and protect the lives and properties of people living near the river.

“Barangay Tastasan was then a flood-prone area, wherein water reaches the houses of the residents when heavy rains occur, and damages the agricultural products as their livelihood,” Nuñal said.

“With this flood control structure, they can sleep well at night even during rainy season, without worrying that water might reach their houses or damage their properties,” she added.

Moreover, the flood control project minimizes the adverse effects of heavy rains such as soil erosion that may destroy farms which is the main source of income of the people living in the area. (With a report from DPWH Region 6/PN)
