ILOILO City – The province of Guimaras, particularly the “Balaan Bukid” (Holy Mountain) is one of the most visited tourist destinations in Western Visayas especially during Lent Season for its famous “Pagtaltal” (Crucifixion).

Hence, considering the influx of foreign and local tourists that may visit the province, whether for religious observance this Holy Week or simply going on a vacation to numerous tourist spots in the island, the Department of Public Works and Highways (DPWH), Guimaras Distirct Engineering Office ensures that national roads are prepared for motorists and the traveling public.

District Engineer Rhodora B. Nuñal said the 128.962 kilometers national road network in Guimaras province are all paved, 121.345 kilometers of which are concrete paved while 7.007 kilometers are asphalt overlaid.

“For the past years, both local and foreign tourists flock in the province to witness the famous “Pagtaltal sa Bala-an Bukid” and it is our duty to make sure that all roads and bridges are in good condition for the safety of all the commuters,” Nuñal said.

Nuñal also said that 601.65 lineal meters of bridges are all in good condition and accessible, providing links to various tourist destinations in the province.

Moreover, Nuñal said the District regularly conducts preventive maintenance along national roads and bridges to ensure better, faster and more convenient travel. They will also install motorist assistance centers in various areas to cater the needs of the public.

Meantime, DPWH-6 regional director Wenceslao M. Leaño, Jr. instructed all District Engineering Offices in the region to reactivate the “Lakbay Alalay” program in observance of the Holy Week this year.

Leaño directed the District Engineers (DEs) to install a Motorist Assistance Center in strategic areas near tourist destinations all over the region to give prompt assistance to the general public.

He also ordered all DEs to ensure that national roads are maintained and passable at all times, obstructions should be removed and necessary informative/directional signs be installed to guide the motorists and the traveling public./PN
