MANILA — Ilonggo Senate President Franklin Drilon is being considered to run for higher office in the next election.
He could even be the ruling Liberal Party’s (LP) standard bearer in 2016, according to Malacañang.
However, the senator from Iloilo City would rather not talk about it this early.
“Hindi po muna natin iniisip iyan. Mahirap magpatakbo ng Senado,” he said in a radio interview yesterday.
Drilon said he wants to “concentrate” on lawmaking.
“Marami ang nagte-testing, na sa tingin nila ay sila dapat ang maging pinuno ng bansa, ngunit ’pag lumlapit na ang 2016 ay makikita natin kung sino talaga ang seryoso,” said the veteran lawmaker.
Last year Drilon also denied he is running for vice president.
Presidential Spokesperson Edwin Lacierda previously told Panay News that the senator is “qualified” to be LP’s ace for the 2016 presidential race.
He is qualified in terms of “experience” and “governance,” Lacierda said, pointing out that Drilon has been in public service for years.
“He is the Senate president. He also served as executive secretary of the late former president Corazon Aquino,” the presidential spokesperson said.
President Benigno Aquino III, however, considers “a number of people” to run under his party and has not yet chosen from among them, Lacierda said./PN
