MANILA – Senate Minority Leader Franklin Drilon urged the government and the communist rebels to agree to a “mutual ceasefire.”
President Rodrigo Duterte called off the peace negotiations with the Communist Party of the Philippines (CPP) after continued rebel attacks on state forces.
The President should continue seeking “common-ground solutions” with the rebel group, the Ilonggo senator said.
“Kailangan bukas pa rin. Ngunit hindi pwedeng ipagpatuloy under this environment,” said Drilon, a lawmaker from Iloilo City. “Tama muna ang putukan. We cannot continue in that kind of environment.”
The CPP should also stop charging “revolutionary tax” and ambushing police and military officers, and face arrest, he said.
“Hindi naman pwede na nag-usap tayo sa kapayapaan, panay naman ang banat ng kabila sa ating mga sundalo, panay naman ang revolutionary tax sa ating mga mangangalakal,” Drilon stressed.
“Sa akin, ang kapayapaan ay importante sa ating lipunan. Ngunit huwag naming abusuhin ang effort natin to have peace by continuing all of these atrocities,” he added. “We must have law and order.”/PN
