CEBU City – The motorcycle driver who alerted the police on the presence of Abu Sayyaf bandits in Clarin, Bohol on April 22 was placed under police protection.
“He is very important to us. We have to protect him. He helped us neutralize the Abu Sayyaf in Bohol,” Chief Superintendent Noli Talino, Police Regional Office 7 director, said on Tuesday.
Talino did not reveal the identity of the informant for security reasons.
The information from the driver led government troops to the hiding place of suspected Abu Sayyaf members in Barangay Bacane, Clarin.
They were the remnants of the group that clashed with government troops on April 11 in Sitio Ilaya, Barangay Napo, Inabanga. The encounter resulted in the death of five suspected Abu Sayyaf members, three soldiers and a policeman.
The clash that started Saturday noon led to the death of Joselito Melloria, a native of Inabanga who was tagged as the bandits’ guide in infiltrating the town.
Three other unidentified Abu Sayyaf members were killed later on Saturday night.
Police accounts said the driver was hired by three foul-smelling men who asked to be taken to any bakery to buy bread.
He suspected them to be part of the group that clashed with government troops in Inabanga and alerted the police.
Mayor Tomas Osmeña of this city said he is willing to give a P100,000 reward to the driver but only if the local government of Clarin will not.
Earlier Bohol governor Edgar Chatto said he did not believe the P1-million reward President Rodrigo Duterte offered for the capture of Abu Sayyaf members in Bohol motivated the driver to alert the police. (PNA)
