Drought hits 10 San Enrique barangays

BACOLOD City – The agricultural town of San Enrique in Negros Occidental is facing severe drought conditions affecting 10 barangays, a consequence attributed to the El Niño phenomenon. The town’s Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Council has reported a critical shortage of water, prompting the recommendation to declare the entire municipality under a state of calamity.

Mayor Jilson Tubillara disclosed that the drought has inflicted significant damage on the agricultural sector, including crops, livestock, and fisheries, with losses estimated at P9 million.

The Sangguniang Bayan is anticipated to approve a state of calamity declaration on Monday, April 8.

According to Tubillara, this declaration is crucial as it will enable the allocation of funds to support the affected farmers.

It would ensure that the local government can efficiently meet the needs of its constituents during this period, added Tubillara./PN
