ILOILO City – A son of the suspected leader of the Prevendido drug group was arrested in an antidrug operation in Jaro district.
Originally, Jaro police station and Regional Public Safety Battalion operatives were not after the 26-year-old Jhon Rey Prevendido.
They were surprised to find him in the house of their target, the 32-year-old Maricon Granpenas, in Barangay Dungon A, Jaro around 10:40 p.m. on Thursday.
Prevendido of Barangay Bakhaw, Mandurriao is the eldest son of suspected big-time drug personality Richard.
He and Granpenas were hauled to the lockup cell of the Jaro police station.
Granpenas sold to an undercover police officer a sachet of suspected shabu for P200. Jhon Rey received the payment.
Police further seized 13 sachets of suspected shabu, P800 cash including the buy-bust money, and a gray Mitsubishi Mirage without plate number.
Prevendido also yielded a .45 pistol (serial number 378214) with magazine and four live ammunition and a .9mm pistol with magazine and five live ammunition.
He failed to present licenses for these firearms.
Prevendido will be charged with violation of Section 26 (conspiracy) of Republic Act (RA) 9165, or the Comprehensive Dangerous Drugs Act of 2002, and RA 10591 (illegal possession of firearm), or the Comprehensive Firearms and Ammunition Regulation Act, said Police Officer 2 Alvin Casamayo of Jaro police station.
Granpenas, on the other hand, will be charged with violation of sections 5 (sale) and 11 (possession) of RA 9165, Casamayo said.
A regional trial court (RTC) convicted Jhon Rey Prevendido of a drug-related charge in 2010, Police Regional Office 6 (PRO-6) records showed.
But the Court of Appeals reversed the RTC decision in 2015.
“Because of that, nakagwa sia (he was released),” PRO-6 spokesperson Superintendent Gilbert Gorero said in a television interview.
He lied low but again went active in the drug trade when his father, Richard, went into hiding, Gorero claimed.
An official of the Philippine Drug Enforcement Agency warned Richard and his minions that they could get killed if they do not surrender.
“Sooner or later pag hindi sila mag-surrender, baka madisgrasya pa sila,” Assistant Regional Director Levi Ortiz told Panay News.
Richard and his subgroup leaders constantly move from place to place, so it is hard for the agents to catch him, Ortiz said.
But he believes “the long arm of the law will catch them.”
“They can run, but they can’t die,” stressed Ortiz. “Makukuha rin sila. Matiyaga ang mga operatives natin.”/PN
