ILOILO City – A drug pushing suspect was shot for resisting a policeman out to arrest him on Friday night in Barangay San Isidro, La Paz district.
Samuel Sonon, 30, of Barangay Ticud, La Paz was treated for a gunshot wound on the left leg at the West Visayas State University Medical Center.
He was a subject of a buy-bust operation around 8:20 p.m. on Good Friday but fired his gun twice at a police officer after realizing he was being entrapped.
Fortunately, Police Officer 3 Juanito Gulit was not hit, said Senior Inspector Rey Sumagaysay, La Paz police chief.
Gulit returned fire and wounded Sonon on the left leg.
Sonon previously turned himself in to the La Paz police station in line with the Philippine National Police’s Oplan Double Barrel. He claimed to be a mere drug user.
But he actually continued peddling shabu, said Sumagaysay.
“We had difficulty trying to get him do business with our operative,” the police chief revealed.
The police recovered a total of five sachets of shabu from Sonon.
The suspect faces charges for illegal drug possession and peddling, and for shooting a police officer.
Sonon was shot a week after a high-value drug target in Capiz and an associate were shot to death in Barangay Tuburan, Zarraga, Iloilo.
On April 8, Charles Lubao and Jaime Buaron II alias “Kimboy”, both residents of Roxas City, resisted arrest, according to the Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO).
Lubao pulled out a pistolized M16 rifle and tried to shoot the undercover police officer who bought from him a sachet of shabu for P500, said Senior Inspector Robert Pancha, team leader of the IPPO’s Provincial Drug Enforcement Unit (PDEU) that subjected the suspect to a buy-bust.
The policeman’s backup fired shots at Lubao. The suspect was hit on the chest.
A few meters way from Lubao, Buaron tried to lob a grenade at the policemen, said Pancha. The cops gunned him down, too./PN
