ILOILO – Police in Ajuy town in this province renewed calls for responsible driving after a 35-year-old fisherman died in a motorcycle accident believed to be caused by drunk driving.
The victim identified as alias “Dar” was on his way home to the town’s Barangay Pedada when he crashed into a metal barrier along the road in Barangay Mangorocorro early Saturday morning, April 19.
He had just left the police station after accompanying his brothers who were earlier detained for alarm and scandal following a commotion in Barangay Malayu-an.
According to Police Staff Sergeant Nixon Estacion of the Ajuy Municipal Police Station, the victim was under the influence of alcohol at the time of the incident. He was also not wearing a helmet and had no driver’s license.
The victim was rushed to the nearest hospital. He was later transferred to a medical facility in Iloilo City but despite efforts to save him, he died several hours later.
The case is another grim reminder of the risks associated with drunk driving, Ajuy police said.
“These tragedies are preventable,” Estacion said. “We urge all motorists to prioritize safety and never drive while intoxicated.”
As they continue their campaign to promote road safety, Ajuy police also reminded the public anew that simple precautions — such as wearing helmets and not drinking before driving — can mean the difference between life and death./PN
