MANILA – A party-list representative urged President Rodrigo Duterte to render full-military honors to the late actor Eddie Garcia, who served as a soldier before entering showbiz.
Ako Bicol party-list representative Alfredo Garbin said Garcia deserved to be given honors for being a war veteran and a former officer of the Philippine Scouts right after the Second World War.
“Hinihiling namin kay Pangulong Rodrigo Duterte na iutos ang Half-Mast Flag Honors at karampatang military honors para kay Eddie Garcia dahil siya ay naging sundalo sa Philippine Scouts,” Garbin said.
Garcia was part of the occupation troops of the Philippine Scouts with the United States Army in Japan and was stationed as a military policeman in Okinawa for three years before joining the local entertainment industry.
Meanwhile, Senior Citizen party-list representative Francisco Datol urged the Department of Education to identify a public high school which the Congress should name as the Eddie V. Garcia Memorial National High School in his home province in Sorsogon.
Datol also urged Bicol University to create a permanent memorial exhibit showcasing Garcia’s contributions to Philippine cinema.
The actor suffered the neck injury when he tripped and fell while shooting “Rosang Agimat” TV series for GMA Network last June 8 at Tondo, Manila. He has been in critical condition since then.
He was officially diagnosed with a severe cervical fracture and was placed on “do-not-resuscitate” status last June 15.
Garcia left behind an impressive legacy in a showbiz career that spanned nearly 7 decades, with over 600 films to his name as an actor and film director. Among his last films were “Rainbow Sunset” and “Hintayan Ng Langit.”/PN
