AFTER nearly two decades in showbiz, TV host and actress Toni Gonzaga has grown used to critical comments about her skills and physical appearance.
She tackled these directly in the latest vlog of her sister, actress Alex Gonzaga, wherein they both read harsh remarks about them on social media.
Among them were criticisms on their acting and hosting skills. Others, however, were personal attacks. In particular, Toni’s appearance was targeted, with a number of comments mentioning her jaw and supposedly being cross-eyed.
“Minsan nga,” Toni agreed, after reading one comment referring to her as “duling.”
Alex, who was seated beside Toni, went on to explain that they actually had her sister’s eyes checked by an ophthalmologist.
“Nagpunta kami sa [opthalmologist]. Sabi ng doktor, hindi raw siya duling… Hindi po siya cross-eyed,” Alex said. “Malapit lang pa talaga ‘yung pupil niya sa mutaan (tear duct).”
Toni had a similarly calm response to offensive comments about her looks, including malicious ones saying her husband, filmmaker Paul Soriano, is bound to “hit his head,” or realize she’s not beautiful.
To that, Toni answered: “Hindi naman siya tumitingin sa physical appearance. He looks at the heart.”
Towards the end of the vlog, Toni shared a lesson she drew from American televangelist Joel Osteen, in response to a comment wishing “death” upon her and her entire family.
“Sobra ang galit niya,” she began. “Narinig ko ito kay Joel Osteen: A lot of people are like garbage trucks. They have so much garbage in their hearts, and they’re looking for people… Do not be a trash can. Do not allow other people to throw their garbage on you.” (ABS-CBN News)
