Duterte: China to be ‘fair’ over maritime row

MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte expressed confidence that China will be “fair” as they resolve their territorial dispute over South China Sea.

Duterte said on Tuesday he was giving China a “sufficient period” to solve issues in the disputed region.

“Each geopolitics position is something that is critical to China and the stand which we disagreed as we filed the arbitration case,” he said in a speech at the groundbreaking ceremony for the construction of the Estrella-Pantaleon Bridge in Manila.

The President was referring to the Philippines’ victory over China in a landmark arbitration case in 2016.

“But in the meantime that we are talking about a concerted effort of both countries to develop, we have promised to deal with the problem some other time,” Duterte said.

The chief executive was also optimistic that “the equity will be distributed.”

“I cannot elaborate these things now. They are in the blueprint. But, in the days to come, we would realize that China is really a good neighbor,” he said./PN
