MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte is not interested in running for vice president when his current presidential term ends after two years, his spokesperson Harry Roque said.

According to Roque, Duterte is not entertaining the idea of teaming up with his daughter, Davao City Mayor Sara Duterte-Carpio, who is being groomed to run for presidency in 2022.

Ang alam ko, atat na atat na siyang umuwi dito sa Davao. ‘Yang Duterte-Duterte tandem, personal na opinyon lang po ni Sec. (Salvador) Panelo,” Roque said in a virtual presser on Monday.

Panelo, who serves as Chief Presidential Legal Counsel, previously floated the idea of a Duterte-Duterte tandem for the 2020 Presidential elections as he said “opposition won’t stand a chance against such powerful tandem.”

Panelo explained in his Counterpoint program that President Duterte is not prohibited from running for vice president in the next elections.

Except for seeking reelection, he said Duterte may run for lower elective post, similar to what then President Gloria Arroyo did. After her presidential term from 2001 to 2010, Arroyo served three terms as representative of the second district of Pampanga. She was elected House Speaker in 2018./PN
