MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte said the government’s ban on the deployment of overseas Filipino workers (OFWs) to Kuwait will be extended to other countries.

After an Ilongga domestic worker died in Kuwait and amid reports on widespread abuse among Filipino workers there, the Philippines – on the order of Duterte – stopped sending workers to the Gulf state.

“The ban will continue, and it will extend to other countries,” the President said during the 20th Founding Anniversary celebration of the Chinese Filipino Business Club, Inc.

Mahirapan sila. Well, humihingi na ako ng tawad sa inyo. I will not allow…HindiWala akong plano na ipadala kayo doon tapos babuyin kayo. Hindi ko style ’yan,” he said.

Aside from the ban, Duterte also ordered the repatriation of undocumented and overstaying OFWs in that country.

“That’s why I’m suspending and it will continue. Will it involve hardships? Yes. It will involve sacrifice? Yes. Would it mean anger? Yes. To me, yes,” said the President.

Tanggapin ko lahat. I’m ready to admit everything but the ban stands. Umuwi lang kayo dito, maski na papaano matulungan ko kayo, maski sa pagkain,” he added.

Duterte reiterated that the Filipino is nobody’s slave.

“The Filipino seeks to work abroad to earn a living so that he can help his family because the economy here, local, cannot absorb the entire workforce,” he said.

The President appealed to other countries to give Filipinos a sense of human dignity.

“Treat us humanely, be tolerant of our cultural differences, and do not abuse our women because it will inflict a long and lasting wound,” he said. “Maybe this generation cannot and will not forget it…Please do not degrade them like animals, do not treat them as a slave.”/PN
