MANILA – President Rodrigo Duterte was scheduled to visit the wake of Joanna Demafelis in Sara town in Iloilo province this week, his spokesman said on Monday.

Demafelis was beaten to death in Kuwait where she was employed as a domestic worker.

Her body was found stuffed in a freezer. Her remains were brought back to the Philippines on Friday, and then to her hometown on Saturday.

The government will extend assistance to the bereaved family, Presidential Spokesman Harry Roque said.

“Death (and burial benefits), financial assistance to the family. And I’m sure the President will announce other contributions,” Roque told Panay News.

Overseas Workers’ Welfare Administration chief Hans Leo Cacdac earlier disclosed Duterte’s planned visit to the wake.

“I think there will be a proper announcement from the Office of the President. But, yes, the President is determined to visit the family,” said Cacdac./PN
