Earthquake damages century-old church in Anini-y

ILOILO City – A magnitude 4.8 earthquake jolted the southern part of Antique province around 7:16 a.m. on Friday.

According to the Philippine Institute of Volcanology and Seismology (Phivolcs), the epicenter of the earthquake was 13 kilometers southwest of Anini-y town and Intensity 1 was felt in the towns of San Jose and Culasi.

Initially, according to Provincial Disaster Risk Reduction and Management Office (PDRRMO) head Broderick Train, the earthquake caused cracks on the century-old church, St. John De Nepomoceno, in Anini-y.

“We have coordinated with DPWH (Department of Public Works and Highways) to check the extent of the cracks,” said Train in an interview over Radyo Pilipinas Iloilo.

Other infrastructures will also be checked, he said.

Train added that the PDRRMO conducted assessment on the ground to check the extent of the damage in residential areas and critical areas.

As of this writing, they are waiting for initial report on the assessment. The PDRRMO head added that so far no casualty was reported.

So far, some Antiqueños posted online the scenarios on the ground showing minor damage caused by the earthquake.

Some photos showed house ornaments and appliances were destroyed inside the houses especially in Anini-y area./PN
