Miriam’s challenge

FORMER senator Miriam Defensor-Santiago had a great sense of humor. But she was more than her so-called hugot lines or pickup lines; to solely focus on that part of her persona trivializes the amazing woman of substance that she was and her great contributions to the country.
Inday Miriam, as Ilonggos fondly called her, lived a very colorful and fruitful life. She once said she was “a staunch believer in God, and the triumph of good over evil.” She encouraged people “to remain adamant that good will triumph over evil, and that good governance will triumph over corruption.”
One of the finest leaders of our country, she was a pillar of Philippine politics, the Iron Lady of Asia, a public servant, and to those close to her, a friend. A fierce defender of good governance, she challenged the nation to become better for the future of the coming generations.
We thank her for her long career in public service. She was a dedicated public servant who, despite her challenging medical condition, remained hardworking; she continued to file bills and resolutions, and monitored Senate proceedings, never failing the people who had put their trust and confidence in her. She was an inspiration and example to women, the youth and to all our fellow Filipinos.
The senator was a brilliant and remarkable lady, one of the legal luminaries of the country recognized internationally. The resounding manner by which she was elected as a judge in the International Criminal Court was one concrete proof of her expertise and outstanding qualifications.
A visionary with a firm grasp of social justice, Inday Miriam’s tremendous courage has always been an inspiration to all of us. May her legacy inspire future generations of leaders to work hard and work together in the fulfillment of our vision to create a better nation.
