BACOLOD City – The prices of eggs sold in various markets in Negros Occidental are now decreasing amid reports from the Department of Agriculture (DA) of a nationwide oversupply of eggs.
Dr. Placeda Lemana, head of the Provincial Veterinary Office (PVO), said the price of large eggs in the province has dropped by five centavos per piece.
However, the prices of small, medium, and extra-large eggs have increased by 10 centavos.
Lemana noted that this increase is not significant and mentioned that they should have another report within this week.
Currently, Negros Occidental produces more than one million eggs daily and is also receiving supplies from neighboring Panay Island and Cebu.
Earlier, the DA called on the public to consume more eggs to address the oversupply in local production.
Farmgate prices of eggs have dropped to as low as P4 per piece.
In Metro Manila, a tray of eggs at the Commonwealth Market in Quezon City is now being sold for as low as P160.
“This is good news for consumers, but it is bad news for egg producers,” said Gregorio San Diego, chairman of the United Broiler Raisers’ Association.
The oversupply is currently blamed on low consumption among Filipinos. (Watchmen Daily Journal)/PN
