THE 4th Sharjah Masters ended Sept. 25 with four grandmasters – Pavel Eljanov, M. Amin Tabatabaei, A.R. Saleh Salem, and Parham Magsoodloo – tying for first place, each finishing with identical 6½ points apiece.
However, by virtue of a better tiebreak, Eljanov – the current number four player of Ukraine – clinched the 4th Sharjah Cup, a gold medal, and the $10,000 champion’s purse. Iran’s Tabatabaei has the best tiebreak quotient of the four, but Eljanov beat him in Round 7, and the first tie-break criteria will be the result of their direct encounter gave the nod to the 38-year-old Eljanov. Tabatabaei settled for the silver and $8,000 prize money, Salem pocketed the bronze and $7,000, while Maghsoodloo went home with $5,000.
Meanwhile, five GMs shared 5th to 9th places with identical six points apiece: Mikheil Mchedlishvili, Rinat Jumabayev, S.L. Narayanan, Nodirbek Yakubboev, and Abhijeet Gupta, who took home $4,500, $4,000, $3,500, $3,000, and $2,500, respectively, after tiebreaks. GM Baskaran Adhiban led an eight-man group of grandmasters who finished with 5½ points apiece and shared 10th to 17th places.
Filipino IM Oliver Dimakiling wound up in a share of 26th to 38th places with 4½ points and out of the money circle, as only the top 15 finishers are given prize money.
