BACOLOD City – “Embrace the lessons of EDSA Uno.”
This was Cong. Greg Gasataya’s message to Filipinos for the commemoration of the 33rd People Power Revolution on Monday.
“Thirty-three years ago today, we Filipinos created history when millions of us moved to bring down a dictatorship that plunged the nation into economic and political crises,” the Bacolod lone district representative said on Monday.
The People Power Revolution was a series of popular demonstrations in the country, mostly in the Manila from Feb. 22 to 25, 1986.
During that time, there was a sustained civil resistance against regime violence and electoral fraud.
Gasataya said people who suffered during the revolution – “those who died in the mountains or cities [and those] who kept the fires of press freedom burning in the darkest of nights” – should be honored.
“We give honor to them, the victorious dead. We must also pause to look at the real task of nation-building, the real challenge that has confronted us in the years past,” Gasataya added.
He further said: “I urge everyone to remember our civic duties for it is only in taking part in things small and big, in looking after one another, in being our brother’s keeper that we can continue to keep the spirit of Edsa Uno burning in our hearts.”/PN
