Empowering Ilonggo youth through digital literacy

THE INFORMATION technology (IT) sector promises high-paying jobs and career growth, both locally and internationally. As CityNet secretary-general Vijay Jagannathan aptly pointed out during the recent 44th CityNet ExeCom Meeting in Iloilo City, geographical barriers no longer hinder success. Thanks to remote work and freelancing, Ilonggos can excel in the global IT market from the comfort of their homes.

The world offers unprecedented opportunities for those equipped with the right skills. For the Ilonggo youth, the time to seize these opportunities is now. With the IT sector flourishing globally, investing in digital literacy has become a necessity, not just an option. But to fully unlock this potential, Iloilo’s youth must be equipped with the necessary tools, particularly in mathematics, science, and digital technologies.

Iloilo City is uniquely positioned to nurture digital talent. It boasts numerous universities and training institutions ready to provide programs tailored to the needs of the IT sector. However, these opportunities must be complemented by deliberate efforts from both the government and private sector to make digital education more accessible and practical. Programs that enhance digital literacy must be prioritized. Scholarships, free digital skills training, and partnerships with IT companies can bridge the gap between potential and achievement.

At the same time, continuous skilling must become a mindset. The digital landscape evolves rapidly, rendering today’s knowledge obsolete tomorrow. Initiatives that promote lifelong learning, such as coding boot camps and specialized IT courses, should be encouraged to keep Ilonggo talents competitive.

Automation and artificial intelligence are reshaping traditional industries; it is therefore important for Ilonggos to adapt and excel in emerging fields. By investing in digital literacy, Iloilo can secure not just the youth’s future but also its position as a hub for innovation and development.

The digital age is not waiting for anyone. Now is the time for Ilonggos to take the leap, embrace the opportunities. Through education, governance, and collaboration, we can empower our youth to thrive in the ever-expanding digital world.
