BACOLOD City – Endemic floras are featured in the design of the New Generation Currency Coin Series of the Bangko Sentral ng Pilipinas.
These complement the endemic fauna in the design of the NGC Banknote Series, according to Bank Officer II Dori Mae Valezuela of BSP-Bacolod.
According to the central bank, the flowers kapa-kapa, tayabak, waling-waling, katmon, kapal-kapal baging, and mangkono mirror the Filipinos’ resiliency amid pressures.
Aside from these flowers, the new coin series also features the new BSP logo, the images of three national heroes – Apolinario Mabini in the P10 coin, Andres Bonifacio in the P5 and Jose Rizal in the P1 – and a stylized three-stars-and-a-sun in the 25-, 5- and 1-centavo coins.
Valenzuela told a press briefing the BSP chose the endemic flora “to align with the theme of our paper bills, which featured the Philippine fauna.”
The designs, features and other specifications of the NGC coins have undergone extensive studies by the BSP’s Numismatic Committee and Currency Management Committee, she explained.
The Monetary Board then reviewed the committees’ proposal and recommended the specifications for the final approval of the President. (With PIA/PN)
