CONSUMERS fear the TRAIN or Tax Reform for Acceleration and Inclusion will jack up the prices of everything, including electricity. On the flipside, this could be a good thing. We may be forced to observe energy conservation measures.
But there is more to energy conservation than just saving money or scrimping on the budget due to higher taxes. By conserving energy, we also contribute to reducing our carbon footprint, thereby contributing to climate change mitigation.
There are simple and practical measures that all of us can do such as using of low-wattage appliances; unplugging of electronics when not in use; switching off lights when leaving a room; opening curtains for natural lighting; doing all the ironing of clothes at one time; avoiding frequent opening of the refrigerator door and defrosting it once a week. Yes, traditional energy conservation measures remain relevant. And they work.
Meanwhile, all government agencies and local government units can also ensure the efficient use of energy in their respective offices, facilities and transportation units by incorporating energy saving methods in their local development plans. Energy efficiency is the most effective way to reduce greenhouse gas emissions.
We need to institutionalize energy efficiency and conservation as a national way of life. We must work towards the efficient and judicious utilization of energy by developing and implementing energy efficiency and conservation plans and programs. This will help us secure sufficiency and stability of energy supply in the country.
More importantly, energy conservation is economical. It will save us a lot of money. It is also environment-friendly.
