BACOLOD City – Negros Occidental Provincial Administrator Lucille Gelvolea denied the allegations that the Negros First Blood Bank is running out of blood.

The provincial government runs the Negros First Blood Bank.

Gelvolea admitted that there is currently a huge demand for rare blood types, like B+ and AB+.

She said there were few donors of the rare blood types.

But “generally,” the supply of blood at the center is “more than enough” to meet the demands of its clients, she stressed.

According to Gelvolea, blood center personnel are regularly conducting mobile bloodletting activities to replenish their blood supply.

Gelvolea also stressed that the blood center is complying with its financial obligations to the suppliers of its reagents used to screen blood.

The delay in paying the suppliers is due to the processing of papers, she added.

“Each time we conduct bloodletting activities, our personnel have reagents to use for screening blood to make sure that it will not spoil,” Gelvolea said.

With the absence of the reagents, the Negros First Blood Center turns over its collected blood to the Corazon Locsin Montelibano Memorial Regional Hospital for proper disposition and screening, Gelovolea added.

The reagents are used to determine if the donated blood is free from contamination, like infection of the human immunodeficiency virus, malaria and hepatitis, among others./PN
