BACOLOD City – School canteens, eateries and individual vendors inside and near schools must have sanitary and business permits, Councilor Ricardo Tan said.
The City Health Office and the Permits and Licensing Division should inspect them “to ensure the safety and good health of all,” he said.
According to Tan, “food poisoning and diarrhea are only a few of the health concerns that confront parents and schools during school days.”
The businesses’ sanitary practices must also be checked and observed to further protect the “health and safety of students, teachers, parents, and other people who patronize their products,” he said.
The councilor said the inspection will also make sure “the [food products] are free from contamination.”
City Ordinance No. 03-15-756 series of 2015 requires the city government, in cooperation with the private sector and national line agencies, to conduct a mandatory training on safe food handling and similar courses to all food handlers in food businesses.
Last year the Sangguniang Panlungsod also urged the City Mayor’s Office to hold a food safety training among all school canteen workers and ambulant vendors outside schools.
Vendors selling inside and outside schools will not be issued clearance from the City Health Office — a requirement in acquiring a business permit — if they have not undergone food handling training, said Dr. Grace Tan, Environmental Sanitation Division chief./PN
