THE ENEMY of my enemy is my friend. That is a doctrine that has governed human nature since we started becoming territorial.

You see it during war, you see it in politics, you see it in high school cliques. The best way to bring people together is to give them a common enemy.

But let’s say we take away that common enemy. What happens when the oppressed defeats the oppressor and starts a “new beginning”?

There may be peace for a time but after a while a new evil always spawns. It could be from the leftover idealisms of the oppressor hiding in the shadows, it could be from the leaders of the oppressed who will try and force their ideals upon their more submissive companions. Or it could be from those whose intentions were never for the greater good, but for their own benefit.

It’s a never ending cycle that is synonymous with human existence.

So that’s the risk you take with revolutions, rebellions, radical protests. We are all allies fighting a common enemy. However, what will happen when the enemy is gone?

How many times has it happened that a country gets freed from its dictator but ends up getting stuck in a dystopic hamster wheel?

So that’s a sad truth we have to accept. There is no ideal government. There is no true equality among men. Mankind was destined to live in a cycle of oppression.

Ambition, wealth and pride fuel our greed everyday and even the most virtuous sooner or later fall victim. The best we can do for the welfare of our loved ones is make sure we do not replace the oppressor with someone worse. (angelica.panaynews@gmail.com/PN)
