MANILA – German mentor Sven-Goran Eriksson could be on his way out after recently guiding the Philippine men’s football team in their maiden stint in the 2019 AFC Asian Cup.
A report by the Brisbane Times on Friday said Eriksson applied to be the head coach of Australia’s Brisbane Roar after its mentor John Aloisi tendered resignation.
Among Eriksson’s fellow applicant for the Brisbane Boar coaching stint were former Indian national team coach Stephen Constantine and former A-League marquee Robbie Fowler.
The 70-year-old Eriksson is reported to be on a short-term deal as the Azkals mentor as he have only signed three-month contract when he took over from interim mentor Scott Cooper last October.
During his time as the Azkals mentor, Eriksson guided the national men’s football team in the 2018 AFF Suzuki Cup where they bowed out in the semifinals round after losing to Vietnam.
In their just concluded campaign in the 2019 AFC Asian Cup, the Azkals dropped all of their three matches against South Korea, China and Kyrgyzstan and only scored a goal the entire competition.
Prior to his Azkals coaching stint, Eriksson has coached Chinese clubs Shenzhen, Shanghai SIPG and Guangzhou R&F. His last gig in Europe was with Leicester City in 2010-11./PN
