MANILA – Francis Escudero wanted a Senate investigation into the Amnesty International report that said police officers were paid to kill drug suspects.

The senator sought for the bases of the report, released on Wednesday, “tainting” the image of the Philippines.

Ito ay seryosong alegasyon na nanggaling sa isang (This is a serious allegation from an) international body,” Escudero stressed.

Aside from verifying the claims in the Amnesty report, the Senate probe will hold the guilty accountable, he said.

“It will give the Philippine National Police a chance to air their side and dispute the allegations if they were untrue,” said Escudero.

The senator told the “Kapihan sa Senado” yesterday he may file a resolution seeking the probe “this coming week.”

Those proven guilty may be charged with conspiracy to commit murder, Escudero said.

According to the Amnesty, police officers were paid between P8,000 and P15,000 to kill drug personalities.

They take orders from “high-level officials,” the report stated.

“I will side with the Amnesty if their claims are true,” said Escudero. “Otherwise, they should hold their horses as they are tainting the image of the country.”

He added: “The Amnesty had released reports that were not that accurate, while there were times that they were accurate. In fact, the findings they initially released were in 2015, during the previous administration.”/PN
