YES, moi is quite aware that it’s rabies awareness month and for dogs suffering from this fatal and incurable disease euthanasia is the last and only resort to end its suffering.
But we are not talking about dogs, rabies or euthanasia as a means to end their sufferings.
We are going to use euthanasia as an analogy to save the republic, the natives and the person infected with an “un-curable malady.”
First things first, for the uninitiated:
Euthanasia: The practice of intentionally ending a life to relieve pain and suffering. It also means “mercy killing” or good death.
Yes, folks it means sometimes literally and also sometimes as an analogy to end one’s suffering.
What immediately comes to mind to some persons when talking about “euthanasia” are some local politicians i.e. former “I Am Iloilo City” and World Mayor No. 5 Jed Mabilog and suspended Iloilo City congressman Jerry Treñas.
God knows Jed Mabilog has suffered enough; perhaps what President Rodrigo Duterte meant when he said he will kill Jed Mabilog is euthanasia.
Just the other day Atty. Dan Cartagena posted on social media that in a radio interview Treñas sounded like he seemed to be suffering from some kind of illness. While some people i.e. Rommel Ynion (I might be mistaken here) are of the opinion that by just being himself Treñas is already a form of malady.
And here we go…excerpts from the March 6 ABS-CBN News:
SolGen quo warranto petition vs Chief Justice Sereno
Solicitor General Jose Calida filed a quo warranto petition before the Supreme Court to remove Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.
In the 34-page petition, Calida said the quo warranto petition is the appropriate remedy to question the validity of Sereno’s appointment, saying the Chief Justice is “unlawfully holding” her post due to her alleged failure to fully disclose her wealth.
The Solicitor General said that while Sereno is an impeachable officer, she, like the President or Vice-President of the Philippines, may be subjected to quo warranto proceedings.
Guidelines for “quo warranto” proceedings, based on 2010 rules of the Presidential Electoral Tribunal, “may be applied by analogy” to Sereno, the OSG said.
“The Court recognizes the availability of quo warranto against an impeachable officer. In other words, respondent cannot claim that as Chief Justice, she can only be removed by impeachment under Section 2, Article XI of the Constitution,” according to the petition.
Before you get lost in translation: Quo warranto is a legal proceeding during which an individual’s right to hold an office and governmental privilege is challenged.
And the double whammy that hit and painted Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno to a corner: Excerpts from the March 9 issue of Panay News:
House panel decides: Sereno may be impeached
The House of Representatives Committee on Justice has found probable cause to impeach Supreme Court Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno.
In a 38-2 voting among members on Thursday, the panel affirmed that Sereno committed culpable violation of the Constitution, betrayal of public trust, corruption, and other high crimes.
Almost all the allegations stated in the complaint filed by lawyer Lorenzo Gadon will make for strong Articles of Impeachment, committee chairman Reynaldo Umali said.
“The impeachment process enshrined in the Constitution is made to ensure that officials holding key positions in the Philippine government are with integrity and those who are perverse in their ways are held accountable to their actions,” he told a press briefing after the hearing.
Umali said they are set to craft the Articles of Impeachment and vote on the final committee report next week. These will then be presented before the House plenary for voting in May.
An affirmative vote from one-third of all members would enable the House to transmit the Articles of Impeachment to the Senate, which would then turn into an impeachment court.
We’re not even in the main match yet, just in the warm-up stages and Sereno is already hit by a 1-2 punch (now where did moi hear that line before?) and from the looks of things it promises to be an attrition match.
There is no doubt that Chief Justice Maria Lourdes Sereno has lost the trust and confidence of the very people she is supposed to head and represent, the Supreme Court. Thirteen justices of the Supreme Court have asked Sereno to go on leave and no court employee showed any support for her. This is the exact opposite when the late Chief Justice Renato Corona was bullied by that nincompoop Noynoy Aquino; almost all members of the bar showed overwhelming support for him.
And what is the “euthanasia” in this scenario? Quite simple really. The quo warranto petition filed by Solicitor General Jose Calida will spare the republic millions of pesos and the natives the agony of a televised impeachment with grandstanding senators; God knows how cruel that is.
The ideal thing would be for Sereno to resign but she’s clinging like a barnacle as if being Chief Justice is her God-given right even if she was not qualified to be one in the first place.
Oh wait, to the “devotees of the cult of the yellow ribbon” the fruit of the loins of that “sainthood interrupted” Cory and “hero” Ninoy has almost god-like status, so God-given indeed. (brotherlouie16@gmail.com/PN)
