BACOLOD City – The arrest of former National Federation of Sugarcane Workers (NSFW) chairman Isidro Castillo has angered the Bagong Alyansang Makabayan (Bayan)-Negros.

According to Bayan-Negros secretary-general Christian Tuayon, Castillo’s arrest was part of the crackdown campaign of the Duterte Administration against members of militant and progressive groups in the country.

President Rodrigo Duterte signed in December last year a proclamation declaring the Communist Party of the Philippines and the New People’s Army as terrorist organizations.

Duterte also tagged militant and progressive groups as legal fronts of rebels.

Around 12 p.m. on Saturday, joint elements of the Negros Occidental Police Provincial Office and the Bacolod City Police Office arrested Castillo in Barangay 12 on the strength of a warrant in relation to a murder charge filed against him.

Castillo was detained at the Police Station 1 lockup facility in the city.

The murder charge stemmed from the death of 1st Lieutenant Archie Polenzo in 2010.

Polenzo was killed by suspected rebels in Cadiz City, police said.

Tuayon said the same murder charge was filed against him and other leaders of militant groups in Negros Occidental.

According to Tuayon, Castillo had been inactive with the NFSW for “many years now.”

Castillo’s arrest shocked him and other militant group members, Tuayon said.

Tuayon said they will continue to call for justice for all peasants and progressive group organizers who were killed in Negros Island for their causes./PN
