ILOILO City – A former overseas Filipino worker was shot yesterday in Barangay Pedada, Ajuy, Iloilo. Police believed land dispute sparked the shooting.
Jay Barabona died of multiple gunshot wounds at the Barotac Viejo District Hospital. He was on his way home from Barangay Luca, Ajuy when shot.
The police identified two suspects – the Dela Vega brothers Ramonito, 34, and Rene, 28, both of Barangay Pedada, too.
Cops were able to arrest Ramonito.
The shooting happened around 4:30 a.m. Barabona was driving his motorcycle, said Chief Inspector Charlie Sustento, Ajuy police chief.
From what the police gathered, the Dela Vega brothers had another companion that remained unidentified as of this writing.
Barabona was shot on the chest and abdomen.
“We have witnesses who saw the elder Dela Vega shooting the victim,” said Sustento.
Policemen recovered from the crime scene two empty bullet shells of a .9mm pistol and one live ammunition.
Sustento said Barabona’s family now owned around 20 hectares of land in their barangay which the Dela Vegas were also claiming to be their own.
“Kaso ang mga Barabona may gina uyatan nga titulo samtang ang Dela Vega wala. Amo na ila gina awayan,” said Sustento.
He ordered a manhunt against Rene and the other suspect.
“We are calling on the younger Dela Vega to surrender peacefully. Do not fight the police,” said Sustento./PN
