ILOILO – An early morning police operation yesterday led to the apprehension of a former seaman found in possession of multiple high-powered firearms in Barangay Poblacion Ilawod, San Enrique, Iloilo.
The 43-year-old alias “Jero” had been under surveillance following reports that he was frequently seen carrying firearms in public.
Acting on this report, the Criminal Investigation and Detection Group (CIDG) Iloilo City Field Unit led by Police Captain Liberato Yorpo executed a search warrant at his residence.
The suspect allegedly attempted to flee but was quickly apprehended by the police and Special Action Force (SAF) operatives.
A search of his home uncovered a KG-9 submachine gun, a homemade 5.56 pistol, a caliber .38 revolver, a caliber .45 pistol, assorted live ammunition, and a grenade launcher round.
Authorities also revealed that he was a target for a planned buy-bust operation by the Iloilo Police Provincial Office (IPPO), which was aborted due to an alleged tip-off.
The suspect, meanwhile, admitted to using illegal drugs but denied involvement in illegal drugs dealing.
Jero is currently in the custody of CIDG Iloilo City and will face multiple charges, including illegal possession of firearms and ammunition.
Police were also looking into the suspect’s possible links to criminal groups operating in the province./PN
