“It is with profound sadness that we announce the passing of our dear Papa and Lolo,” Rebo said in a statement posted on his social media page.

“We will soon announce details of the service honoring his life, and we look forward to the opportunity to gather and pay tribute to a life lived with integrity and purpose,” he added.

“Papa/Lolo has passed on, but his spirit will continue to inspire us to strive for a more just world,” he further said.

Rene was elected senator in 1987 up to 1992 and served as chairman of the Senate Committee on Ethics and Privilege and the Ad Coc Committee on the Bataan Nuclear power plant.

He practiced law and worked as a human rights lawyer from 1972 until 1986. He then served as spokesperson of then-candidate and later on president-elect Corazon Aquino.
